Where you are

I’ve designed and validated RS-485 and Modbus networks across product ranges installed by the thousand, integrated meters and sensors from vendors who each read the standard their own way, and chased the same faults on site. Almost all of them come down to a short list: termination, biasing, isolation and grounding, surge protection, cable length and topology, addressing and timing, or a register map that isn’t what the datasheet says.

Four things cause most of it: topology, termination, biasing and the ground reference. A bus wired as a star with one terminator works with ten devices on a short run and fails with thirty on a long one — which is why it passed at handover and doesn’t now.

Network review — AUD 2,500

You send me the wiring drawings, the list of meters and sensors, the BMS’s communication settings, and a recording of the traffic on the network. Your BMS contractor or electrician will have most of this; the recording takes a cheap USB adapter and free software, and I’ll send instructions for whoever does it. If nobody on site can take one, the on-site day does. You get a written report: what’s wrong, why, and the fix for each item — ranked so you can do the cheap ones first, and clear about which items are the installer’s and which are the meter supplier’s.

On-site day — AUD 2,000 (Melbourne and surrounds)

When it has to be seen, or when nobody on site can take a recording: I come for a day, put test equipment on the network, walk the cable route, check every connection and earth, record the live traffic, and leave you with a written, ranked list of what’s wrong and what to change. [Say whether the BMS stays up while you work.] You arrange access to plant rooms and switchboards and someone who knows where the cables go. Travel outside Melbourne quoted.

Meter and sensor integration review — AUD 1,500

For the “it answers but the numbers are wrong” problem: I read the device against its register map, find the byte-order, scaling, function-code and timing quirks, and give you the exact settings and a test that proves each reading.

What I need from you

The wiring drawings (or a sketch and photos), the list of meters and sensors with model numbers and network addresses, the BMS’s communication settings (your BMS contractor has these: speed, parity, timeouts), what fails and when, and a traffic recording if someone can take one.
